I know a little of this, a little of that myself, but never focused on ordinary conversation. I agree that it is use it or lose it. I disagree that you have to do it when young. It is mainly a matter of learning words and phrases so well that they spring readily to mind at appropriate times. That is mainly a matter of immersion. That is why I am reading a fair amount in French, to get past that point where one has to give it a moments thought and translate discrete parts into English. Increasingly, I know what is said as soon as I read it, without translating in my head, or puzzling out. I still get thrown some, for example, by Le Monde, and I still need the dictionary from time to time. But more and more is sinking in. Increasingly, I am able to spontaneously say things without error, or with minor error, though I am still sticking to relatively simple expressions. Eventually, I hope to be fairly fluent.
