Download a free copy of OpenOffice.org and you probably won't even have to ask for a retransmit.

GV, Microsoft has free viewers for latest Word, Power Point etc.
IMO constant changing file formats is the biggest Microsoft's scam. They do it on purpose. It would be very easy for them to allow old program versions to open new formats. It may complain that it didn't understand some tags but in 99.999% it would work seamlessly because most people use less than 10% of Word's features.

If you don't have some proprietary sophisticated macros and Excel scripts you may want to try StarOffice.
