Was Owen fouled? Yeah. Could he have stayed on his feet? Yeah, but he made the smarter move. -g- I'm sure the game had enormous emotional impact on English and Argentinian fans, but I didn't really think it was all that great a game. England played like England and Argentina played like some team other than Argentina.

Should be interesting to see how a studly young Nigerian team relieved of all pressure performs against England. Given the Three Lions history of choking after big games (beat germany then have worlds of trouble with Greece???) I would not be surprised by an African triumph.

I imagine it is farily obvious that I am not a huge fan of recent English football, but I will say that they appear to finally shaking of the lingering effects of the 5-year ban. By '06 I may even be a fan. -g-

I just saw the England-Argentina game on tape in a Santa Barbara English pub. It seems in this area if you can't get up at 4:00 am you won't see the game on TV at all.

It seemed fairly evenly matched though England had more clear goal scoring chances. Argentina had lots of possession particularly toward the end as England tired but they couldn't do anything with it or weren't allowed to do anything with it.

I think it was a penalty as it would have been a free kick had it been outside the area. Even if there was no contact Owen was obstructed - completely unnecessarily as it turned out as he wasn't clear on goal.

I still feel that Argentina will get through though I hope that Sweden make it instead - I really can't stand all that gamesmanship.

Without the Argentine defender's foul, Owen would have gotten through and very likely to score at that moment. Remember, prior to the penalty, Owen already created several very dangerous situation in the Argentine penalty area. Owen's penetration and score ability (it's already known to everyone in the world cup) made Argentine defenders desperate in the game. I watched the play. The penalty looked good to me.

Watch it VERY carefully, I think his foot never makes contact with Owen

George, for a guy of your knowledge of this sport, I have to assume you said the above to create controversy on the thread to make it more lively, -ggg- (which I admit, unfortunately the timing of the games has had an effect on it, unlike in '98).

First it is the intent of the Argentinean defender (and he knew it) to bring Owen down, as he throws his leg once Owen was past him.

Second he may not have touched him but he blocked a "goal threatening play" inside the area...That is the reason I said it was not very smart of him to have done so.

That justifies a penalty call, (as much as I would have liked to seen it NOT being called)

England played a smarter game and took advantage of the one important error of the Argentineans. I did not like the tactic at the end of enclosing in the defense and let the Argentineans fire at will... in this case it paid off bit it could have backed fired.

What I have been noticing is that this stricter (and fair, so far) way of calling the games is resulting in a better quality of the games and a better tournament.

I have to asume that Argentina was too uptight and hence did not score (or created a good opportunity), in that second half, without doubt, in this game England was the better team. (remember Owen's pass to the post in the first half ? -g, that should have been a goal)

As for Spain... I think this is their year... so far the most consistent team and they are scoring goals, this is a better way of winning matches.
