It's almost as if he mocks the very notion of comprehending humanity, or conveying comprehension through a neatly-resolved story on film. Which is just fine with me, because I don't disagree with that sentiment at all. " Not only it motivates me to see the film (which I have not seen --and De Niro is one of my favorite actors), but it reinforces (for me) the idea that the ending of a film is the hardest part of it, since many great movies during the entire film, their endings are disappointing. Thus, in this instance, it is each individual who is left with the task of... actually ending the movie in each one's own mind [and I am no movie critic] I also like the ending of that same paragraph: "Each crossroads we face will involve choices that define us forever, because to take one path is to leave another behind. And what we leave behind is not merely another life we may have lived, but another self we may have been. This is the essential underpinning of Once Upon a Time in America, because in that respect, the story of Noodles is the story of us all." ...and yes, Señorita Fox, thanks again for bring it to our attention.
