ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A New York businessman sentenced in absentia to 845 years in prison for a scheme that bilked millions from an insurance company was extradited to Orlando on Sunday from Austria , the FBI said.

Sholam Weiss, from Monsey, N.Y., was arrested in Vienna in October 2000. In 1999, a federal jury in Orlando convicted him of pocketing $125 million from the National Heritage Life Insurance Co. Weiss fled the United States before sentencing.

He was returned to the United States by a team of U.S. Marshals and FBI agents.

Weiss will have an initial appearance before a federal magistrate and attend a sentencing hearing, the FBI said. A message left with the FBI on Sunday to find out when he would appear was not immediately returned.

Initially, a panel of judges on an Austrian appeals court had refused to extradite Weiss, saying he should be tried in Austria, where the maximum sentence would be 10 years. In May, the court changed its mind.

Besides Weiss, six others were convicted or pleaded guilty in the plot that ultimately skimmed more than $600 million from National Heritage, the FBI said. The scheme caused the Orlando company's 1994 collapse. Many of its 25,000 customers lost their life savings.
