Early versions of Ashcroft's 'anti terrorist' bill including a request to suspend habeas corpus. That means that they could lock you up, without having to provide cause or bring you before a judge, for as long as they please.

Congress was horrified, and this provision immediately struck from the bill.

Shows that Ashcroft would rather create a police state than do his job within the framework of the Constitution. Sure, it would be easier to catch terrorists and criminals if we stripped all individual rights, but who wants that?
