That was part of the problem with the guy I had to let go. The people responsible for hiring had overlooked the skill requirements in their zeal to hire someone "cheap" (i.e. where they could bill the client for $X and pay the programmer $X/3).

Echoing your frustration about training people on legacy systems, I fondly recall the time I explained MVS mainframe disk allocation JCL to some of these COBOL newbies, and watching their eyes grow wide as saucers. Apparently these new-fangled systems handle that sort of thing automatically <ggg>.
