IBM -- funny -- the problems cited -- and the solution to break IBM up into autonomous operating units, were the same ones mentioned back in 1993 -- when John Akers left and Gerstner came in.

Most of the article is true. Executives spend more time navigating IBM's internal politics than innovating and beating their competition.

By the way -- the services business -- started at my division (government contracts are basically customer services oriented), by 2 executives named Gerry Ebker and Denny Welch.

I was the first person I knew to say; "No matter what your job is at IBM or how old you are, you are always being appraised as how good a vice president would you make."
