April was one of the worst PC sales months in recent years, with sales down 22.5 percent for U.S. retailers, leaving the largest retail PC seller, Hewlett-Packard (news - web sites), with 10 weeks of inventory for Compaq (news - web sites) PCs and seven weeks for HP PCs, according to NPD Techworld. Normally, three weeks is considered ideal.

I suspect DELL is doing better than that. This could be largely an HP/Compaq problem, due to declining quality over the years and perhaps loss of focus due to the merger. A marriage between two people who figure they'd better get hitched because the ugliness is closing in fast always ends up being a marriage between two ugly people before long.
