My kids go to a Montessori school. It's a partnership school which blends both elements of public and private. The public system provides the space and teachers, and the private side provides the curriculum, books, and materials. There is no transportation system to the school, so parents have gotten creative in shuttlelling those evil SUV's around town. The class is in a section of an old school in the lower income part of town. That's why the space is available.

You're required as a parent to spend at least one day helping out in the classroom a week. Fortunately, my wife is a stay-at-home mom who can afford the time.

It's the only one of it's kind in Washington State (I believe), and as parents we fight the education establishment every year (well, my wife really does most of the fighting,) to keep it alive with local politicians. Fortunately, the kids state testing grades have been superlative. I believe the highest in the state. So the establishment has a tough time shutting it down. My son just finished his third grade Iowa state testing and scored in the 96% nationally.

I'm so proud of that little man!

I'm a big believer in the Montessori method of hands on learning. Especially, in the early years.
