EOTD Location Technology Is Failing

This should be no surprise to the TDMA/GSM operators. Nextel ran tests over a year ago that was convincing in showing EOTD would never work in rural areas. This seems easy to understand--if it takes three or four cellular sites to determine a mobile device's location with EOTD and when a subscriber is on a highway that is typically covered by only one or two cellular sites, it isn't going to work. Much of the cellular coverage outside of urban areas is like this example. Other rural areas are covered by a minimum of one or two cellular sites.

The winners are going to be the providers of assisted GPS locations services in the U.S. Look to Qualcomm's SnapTrack unit and companies like SiRF Technologies to be the leaders.

New BREW White Paper from QCOM. This 23-page paper is excellent. I had worried about 3G enhanced wireless phones becoming as prone to viruses, hackers and software crashes as PCs. Qualcomm makes a strong case that BREW will alleviate these problems.
