Mike,

I don't think this one is solved by the language of the hyper patriot nor of the Clinton basher. I think this one is addressed (not solved) best by paying serious attention to how a dysfunctional bureaucracy (has been so for a great period of time, not just the 90s) can be made ever so slightly more functional.

And I think it's addressed by dealing, specifically, with the issues we've seen raised during the last several weeks--the lack of communication, failure of analysis, etc.

I have no doubt the structural sources of these dysfunctions go back through the Clinton years into prior administrations. I have no doubt the Clinton folk came to address the threat of Al Qaeda late in their administration. I have no doubt the Bush administration put that threat on the back burner in the first months--see Ashcroft's first budget requests, among other items.

But it's all here now. I would love to see the homeland security stuff made ever so slightly better. And I would love to see it done without the politicizing offered by the hyper patriots of the right. But that might be too much to ask for.

Living around NYC these days sort of gets one's attention.

until the politicians are held accountable for their failures and lies and not allowed to escape unscathed for any reason whatsoever, continued political failure and the resulting wars will continue to occur.

Bingo!! And that's why political decapitation MUST be part of ANY war fighting strategy. Call it assassination, or merely expiration of their birth certificates, what have you.. But had we managed to kill Hitler, WWII would have been over far sooner than it was.

And the same should stand with any individual, muslim or otherwise, who publicly advocates committing a terrorist attack upon the US (WMD, or otherwise). By making such a statement, they have made themselves a target.
