'Palestinians planned to attack beaches' - Israel

The Israeli army says two armed Palestinians tried to swim along the Mediterranean coast to attack civilians on the beaches of southern Israel.

The two were spotted by naval personnel at a shore observation station near the northern edge of the Gaza Strip, an officer at the facility said.

Both the Palestinians were shot.

One body washed ashore on Saturday and a second washed up today. The two men were identified as members of militant group Islamic Jihad.

A bag belonging to them had automatic rifles and grenades, the army said.

Elsewhere, militant Islamic group Hamas has claimed responsibility for an attack on the Jewish settlement of Karmei Tsur. The gunmen killed a pregnant woman, her husband and an Israeli reserve soldier.

One Palestinian, identified by Hamas as Ahmed Masalme, was also killed. A second gunman escaped to the nearby Palestinian village of Halhoul.

"This military resistance is the acceptable way and the proper way of confronting Israeli military forces," said Ismail Abu Shanab, a Hamas leader in Gaza.

And The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine has claimed responsibility for an attack on four Israeli soldiers who were wounded in the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar.

The group said 18-year-old gunman Ahmed Hammad, 18 was killed. The group issued a leaflet vowing to "continue its struggle for liberating Palestine."
