Steve brought up a good point about range and line of sight type interference. That is true for consumer basestations, but for metro access points there is no reason to stay away from much bigger antennas, more power, etc at the base end.

Yes there is a reason...the FCC won't allow it. The FCC limits the ISM band to specific volt/meter measurements from the antenna.
