Let me know what you find out. I need (well, no, I want!) a new computer to set up in the new home office. But I refuse to get XP if Microsoft is still requiring you to ask "mommy may I" each time you want to use it. So I think I'm stuck using 2000.

Actually I am going to upgrade my system (been meaning to for months) and am trying to do research on SI by reading the expert threads on whether to go the AMD Athlon route this time.. Heard some good things about the performance of their chips.. Plus I want/need about 512 DDRAM, and have heard the Athlon gets the most out of the DDRAM..

Intel produces chips that run at a higher clock rate (higher megahertz or gigahertz rating) but AMD Athlon's have more performance at a paticular clock rate.

By the end of the year AMD's hammer chips should be out. Hammer is the internal code name for the series of chips. They decided to market the desktop version of the chip as an Athlon (they might be called Athlon 64) and the server version (which was called Sledgehammer) as an Opteron. The Hammer systems should have really great performance but you might not want to wait that long.

What types of programs do you run or do you plan to run, most often?
