I wondered about that at the time
I never saw that as sexual
but I didn't know about skate keys or the song involved

However this time, I know she's blown it
because I had this funny cartoon image in my head
and she thinks I am threatening her

So of course it does make me think she blew it with you
and of course it occurs to me that "blew" can be thought of sexually
that is not how I meant it

And funny, why that would mean queer- and I don't mean that either
and just because I mention queer and funny
that doesn't mean anything either

and the fact that the sentences are arranged in threes?
doesn't mean a thing
it just happened, and I liked the way it looked

there is so much more I did not mean with this post
I really can't being to tell you how little meaning there is in this post
but I have to go now

I immediately thought of the Melanie song when you posted that, too. Maybe we let pop culture allusions get into our thinking too much. Another song from that album was "I Don't Eat Animals Cuz They Don't Eat Me"

She was so sweet and innocent then.... did you know Melanie Safka has recently joined the Libertarian Party and actively raises funds for them? It's a beautiful thing....

I remember "Roller Skates" all over the radio ... 1970s?

The artist had a very little-girl voice. I know my young pre-teen daughters aped the song, and if it was sexual, it went over their heads as well as us as parents. I just did a quick Google and found this review:

Although Melanie is capable of delivering the most potent and intense material with utmost effect, her recent releases have all been light-hearted and flippant. Her last disc "Alexander Beetle" was good fun, but I never expected it to be a hit, as its appeal was directed too narrowly at the very young. This is another novelty song - about a girl who shuns driving a sports car in favour of zooming around on roller skates - but this time it's aimed at a wider market, because there's also a romance angle. It's jaunty and lively, with a bouncy beat and a catchy hook chorus, and there's a male group singing along in the refrain. It's the sort of song only Melanie could get away with - and she does it with charm and expertise. An extremely entertaining exercise, particularly suited to the coming season.

The obvious sexual innuendo apparently went over a lot of heads, and I think E deserves a lot of credit for exposing this disgraceful attempt to seduce the youngsters of the 1970s. (Not to mention seducing naive parents like us).

I do know that the Washington Monument was intended to be an in-your-face phallic symbol ...but I wonder how many other obvious attempts at subversive sexualization of our moral country are yet to be found out?
