Hi Mike:

I'm saying that there is a magic formula in SV, a key component being the stock option. The stock option represents so much; ownership in a dream. Often they have little or no value when granted, but you can also often see a direct relationship between your efforts and those of your coworkers and the appreciation of the value.

Additionally, stock options have a kind of 'what if' quality that gives them more value than they may actually ever be worth. They provide an excuse to miss family birthdays, get togethers, lawn mowings, etc. They provide a common bond amongst employees (if used properly) that causes coworkers to spur each other to great accomplishments. Their unknown value also helps; a regular bonus or fixed value reward does not provide the same amount of work, because there is always the chance of the 'lottery' result.

If someone else can prove to me that stock options are not a major part of SV success, go for it. But if the argument is that the US can live without that success, I simply cannot agree unless we want to lose our global innovation edge.
