Michael good choice, the XAU, do a search back and correspond various dates of Rydex data with the XAUs historical performance. Your Observation of money into and out of these sectors, is as you observed, not a direct correlation with fielded performance.

I've learned a few thiings about Rydex to keep me very interested. I keep logs now to help me with remembering some quick conditions that correspond to noteworthty market events per index and in general.

Mostly interested in the RUT & gross short interest as they correspond to MM growth and decline , the divergence messages Rydex provides have been helpful affirmations of accumulation and distribution in stocks.

It seems very valid and makes sense.

Change in total assets comes from two elements
1) Change in underlying "Share" Price
2) Change in "number of shares" - buying/selling

TotAssets="NumShares"*Price

Use the first derivative of Total assets and you get the relationship of the changes in Share price and number of shares.

ChgTotAssets ~ OldNumShares*ChgPrice + ChgNumShares*OldPrice
If you use % chgs you get
%ChgTotAssets = %ChgPrice + %ChgNumShares

As you have not got a real price you need a proxy.

=> a %chg in assets not confirmed, (or described) by price can be only explained by buying/selling - I guess you make the interpretation as to whether this is bearish/bullish over some timeframe - I have no idea what though!

I have never understood using Total Assets by themselves as you never know whether it was caused by buying/selling or changes in underlying.

Here is a good example

Good luck, I think you have something. I am just not sure on the time frame.
