I remember reading a very funny symbolic analysis of Ethan Frome (it wasn't meant to be funny, btw) wherein the trees that lined some drive or path were phallic symbols and a red pressed glass plate represented someone's sexuality. There was much much more to it, of course, but the strain it must have been to write this stuff up.
