I remember reading a very funny symbolic analysis of Ethan Frome (it wasn't meant to be funny, btw) wherein the trees that lined some drive or path were phallic symbols and a red pressed glass plate represented someone's sexuality. There was much much more to it, of course, but the strain it must have been to write this stuff up. Sometimes a tree is just a tree, and a pressed glass plate is just a plate, and a post is saying what it is saying, as opposed to what it might be saying if you read into it a lot of stuff that isn't actually there.
