I went the other direction, raised Catholic and switched to Episcopal.

As for the founding fathers, they may have not been able to find any 'moral' countries at all. They despised the King of England, who represented the Church of England.

I personally have nothing against the 10 commandments, but it is Christian. We cannot assume that other religions find it acceptable, or even adequate. I understand the Koran has many more such 'rules' and Muslims may find these ten to be woefully inadequate. But, no moral person can argue against them on their merit (I guess I'm simply restating what you said :)

Note that I have nothing against Christianity, obviously, and believe it provides a fine moral basis for life. But since America is a conglomerate of people from many backgrounds, I just don't think it can serve as a moral basis for all Americans.
