Some things have changed while others have stayed the same.

Still basically a one product company but more unit volumes of LEDs are going into cell phone displays. They still can play the trump card of blue laser possibilities.
RE stock buybacks and cash I am no expert on semi conductor finances but they had way less then half a billion in cash at best of times and bought poorly with UltraRF purchase. I guess management felt that stock was undervalued to peers. There haven't been any major fire sales at semiconductor manufacturing companies as compared to the plethora of telecom infrastructure gear flooding ebay from distressed telephone companies. <g>

Biggest worry in equities recently is hidden liabilities on balance sheet. CREE has had their share but I think management would be very foolish not to have brought them into light of day by now.
