Hi Willcousa, when I was a teenager, my Grandfather said kids have it easy because they could take a bus to school, rather than walk the 15+ miles to school every day like a hearty person should do. :) Things change, what one generation calls unnecessary, another generation calls advancement. Highways weren't necessary either, depending upon a person's perspective.

If a person assumes only yesterday's applications or services, sure, then speed is a Rolls Royce. It's not needed.

But one can envision a society where the way we conduct our business, transact, or interact is completely different from today, more efficient and faster. If something improves efficiency, it's not a Rolls Royce. [An Economics Professor gave the founder of FedEx a poor grade for the concept of shipping packages faster. Shipping something faster wasn't necessary. It was a luxury. Who needed it? ]

Communication plays a role in the underpinnings of any society's advancement, particularly in an increasingly more information-based society. The moment communications is restricted, one has just restricted society's advancement.

Keeping America competitive and advanced, especially America's future children, as the world becomes increasingly more globally competitive, is a goal that would involve keeping communications competitive, not lagging.

Regards,
Amy J
