I prefer gang or posse to outside agitator for the reasons you mention. Someone else was using "agitator" earlier so I stuck to the script. What I'm talking about is not thread insiders and outsiders but those gangs who aren't in on the immediate action but who PM each other as soon at the first sign of a fight so they all pounce from out of the blue and without context on the hapless opponent, whoever that might be. This was characteristic behavior on the BR. We then had a left posse and a right posse. I haven't seen the left posse in ages, but the practice is still in use.
