German Apr Retail Sales -2: Well Below Expectations

WIESBADEN, Germany (Dow Jones)--Germany's retail sales remained well below
last year's level in April, data released by the Federal Statistics Office
Monday showed.

Germany's retail sales fell a real, or inflation-adjusted, 1.9% in April from
a year earlier, after a revised fall of 4.7% on the year in March.

Compared with March, April retail sales fell a real 2.4% on a calendar and
seasonally adjusted basis, after a revised rise of 0.7% on the month in March.

Data is well below expectations. According to a survey by Dow Jones,
economists expected retail sales to fall only 0.2% on the month and 0.5% on the
year.

Germany's retail sales have been well below last year's level every single
month in 2002, the latest data series shows.

Retail sales fell 2.8% on the year in February and 4.1% on the year in
January 2002. The last time they were up on the year was in November 2001, when
they rose 2.1% on the year.

In the first four months of 2002, retail sales fell a nominal 1.6% and a real
3.0% compared with the same period a year earlier, the office added.

All sectors of retail sales with the exception of drugs and cosmetic sales,
up a real 5.0% on the year, and mail order sales, up 8.5% on the year, showed
annual declines in April, the office said.

The Federal Statistics Office Monday provided the following data for April
retail sales. All percent changes are inflation-adjusted.

Apr
Total Retail Sales -1.9%
Food, Beverages, and Tobacco -1.4%
Non-Food Retail Sales -2.3%
of which:
- Clothing, Shoes, Textiles -4.9%
- Household goods, Building
and Do-It-Yourself Retail -4.0%
- Drugs, cosmetics +5.0%
- Non-Store Retail -8.7%
- Mail Order Retail +8.5%

<<some of these energy merchants are worthless, but I bet we are getting ready for a bounce into the end of the week. >>

are you posting this to me hoping i'll save you from yourself as happened with a certain worthless stock a few months back? btw, i don't see you saving me from myself on my Droopy buy. <g>

seriously, i really don't know. i think Calpine for example is worth SOMETHING, but its really hard to know. i just can't bring myself to go long companies with troubled liquidity, even for a scalp (which is the opposite position to my refusal to short a quality business, no matter how high the price).

Cheers
