If that were true, you would expect the EU to be cheering for trade subsidies, not threatening retaliation.

How much of the Roman operating expenses were supplemented through pillaging and plundering?

OK lets say it's half (which I doubt). And lets say that we need to double the 1% (to make up for the lack of good pillaging oportunities) and then double that again to get decent services, hell even double it a third time. I could live with a normal top rate of 8%...


If you want to go in that direction, we could look up the taxes that the American colonists were paying to Great Britain, and if they were substantially lower, we could offer to rescind the Declaration of Independence.

It's interesting to look at some of the really historic information on taxes, but when you go back ~2,000 years, IMO, you shouldn't make much of it other than having a little fun. Which is what my question was doing.
