But on second thought, we could sell the oil wells to the oil companies and make some bucks to pay down the national debt. And think how much the politicians could milk out of the oil companies in campaign contributions as they dickered over the right price to sell them for.

The government could sell the wells, but I suspect that "we" would see little benefit from that, especially since the oil companies would pass the cost of acquiring the wells - and of the campaign contributions - on to the consumer. "We" are not going to come out ahead, you can be sure of that.
