I referred to the Sinai which has never had such a substantial population - it has always been sparsely occupied. The war of attrition was a tactic Egypt chose -the idea was to force Israel to keep reserves mobilized.

South Korea succeeded with large trade barriers and a centrally-planned economy, like Japan.

Yes they did employ protective barriers to protect their industry. Nevertheless, industry was maintained in private hands, not nationalized as was the case in Egypt.
