Wal-Mart Sees June Comp Sales At Upper End Of 5%-7% Gain

NEW YORK, Jun 10, 2002 (ODJ Select via COMTEX) -- By James Covert Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

(Dow Jones)--Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) said Monday that sales at stores open at least a year are on track to hit the upper end of its plan for a 5% to 7% increase for the month of June.

The Bentonville, Ark., discounter said sales of seasonal items were boosted last week by the arrival of warm temperatures throughout most of the country. Food sales drove comparable sales at Wal-Mart's namesake discount stores higher last week by a percentage in the double digits.

In keeping with recent trends, about two-thirds of the sales gains were driven by strong customer traffic at stores, as opposed to transaction size. Most merchandise categories performed above expectations. Stores in the Midwest and Northeast saw the greatest improvement.

The company's Sam's Clubs are currently expected to post June same-store-sales gains at the upper end of their plan for a 3% to 4% increase.

Last week, Wal-Mart said its May same-store sales increased 6.2%, ahead of its plan for a 4% to 6% increase, and beating analysts' expectations of a 4.7% increase, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
