Coupled with the vast subsidies in rich countries is another stumbling block to the eradication of hunger: the conditions put on the distribution of genetically modified seed by the manufacturers, notably Monsanto. It seems that even if we were disposed to improving the farming capacity of poorer countries, Monsanto owns the patents and wants control of all the seed, requiring the farmers to buy new seed from the company each year instead of simply using part of what is produced for a new crop. Naturally, third world farmers are balking at the notion of a multinational controlling the food supply. But in fact that is what they are doing now to a certain extent. This is a complicated legal issue that will have to be resolved before any significant difference can be made.
