Dash Rip Rock Biography
rollingstone.com

Fans of New Orleans roots rockers Dash Rip Rock will tell you that this punkabilly trio is the "greatest bar band ever." And like many great bar bands, Dash Rip Rock have managed to elude mainstream commercial success while maintaining a diehard core of followers (dubbed Dash-Holes) for well over a decade.

The band formed in 1984 -- taking their name from Ellie May's flashy boyfriend on the "Beverly Hillbillies" -- and started out playing rockabilly and surf punk at gigs around Louisiana State University. Their sound soon evolved; teetering between the southern college rock coming out of Athens (R.E.M., Love Tractor) and the punkabilly rhythms emerging from the Austin scene (LeRoi Brothers).

Dash Rip Rock's recording history began in 1987 with a self-titled album on Mammoth Records. Since then, they've released a string of albums on a handful of labels. Their brush with commercial success came in the form of a last minute add-on track to 1995's Get You Some. The song, "Let's Go Smoke Some Pot" (sung to the tune of the early '60s hit "Let's Go to the Hop") was a playful, drug-induced parody of the '90s hippie jam band scene. It received heavy radio play on the West Coast and became one of the most requested songs on L.A.'s monster alt-rock station KROQ.

The band's current lineup consists of bon vivant frontman Bill Davies, who claims to own every book published by Kurt Vonnegut; bassist Ned "Hoaky" Hickel, who says he quit writing songs for the band when he quit smoking pot; and newcomer drummer Kyle Melancon, who likes "long walks on the beach with a woman who lets me be me."

In the summer of 1998, Dash Rip Rock won the Intel New York Music Festival "Pick Your Favorite Band" contest. Their latest album, Pay Dirt, was released in July 1998.
