Yes, the early X rays machines were bad beasts and leaked radation up to ten times what the patient got! The portabnle were really dangerous and were taken out of the market by the U of T back 30 years ago. Funny they did not have detectors to tell them, that, a small cost. X-rays are timy and can leak out the smallest spaces.
