They're doing it because ATT is quite possibly the stupidest company on the planet. Combined with their progeny Lucent, it wouldn't even be a contest.

Giving rebates to get more customers they can't make a profit on, unbelievable.

EDIT: Oh yeah, go for it. May as well get some benefit out of that train wreck.
