Simon Cowell told 'he's an ass' in US version of Pop Idol

Simon Cowell has been called "an ass" during the first episode of the US version of Pop Idol.

One hopeful who was told she was "not a very good singer" told Cowell "well then you're deaf."

American Idol: Search For A Superstar premiered on US TV last night, after 10,000 wannabes auditioned for the show.

Cowell reprises his Pop Idol stint as a judge, this time alongside record producer Randy Jackson and singer Paula Abdul.

In the first show, filmed at the auditions in Los Angeles, Tamika Bush hit back at Cowell after being knocked back.

She told him: "I am hurt and I am angry. He's an ass. And he can kiss my natural-born black ass.''

Tensions have already arisen on the judging panel, with Abdul asking Cowell: "Why do you have to be so rude?"

US network Fox TV is thought to have paid around £35 million for the rights to Pop Idol, the London Evening Standard reports.
