My guess is that "their" positions are not fully reflected in the COT (OTC derivatives). And "they" don't lose - in the end. Small guys make the markets more predictable (trendwise), since large guys quickly explore all inefficiencies, so the market quickly becomes efficient if no small guys are present. Isn't it noteworthy that NASDAQ-100 is the most "trending" market, as measured by the Hurst exponent? Large guys making money on small guys' misfortune... Actually, a rigorous statement. You can check that more "popular" markets are more predictable.
