taken from RealEst thread: surveyor is canary in coalmine

Leading indicator for real estate
I was talking to a friend of mine today who is an architect in the Boston area. We were talking about how difficult it is to get contractors to work on your house. I went on to say that I expected real estate to have peaked and to begin a decline. He then told me that in the last month or so, he has noticed that if you needed a surveyor, there is not wait for an appointment. In the recent past, you had to wait weeks or even a month to get one. He then pointed out that the surveyor is the canary in th coal mine, or as I put it, surveyors are leading indicators. We both concluded that this foretells the coming decline in housing.
