In the very post of mine you cited I agreed that people who support decriminalization can make some meritous arguments towards their point of view. The best argument of which is the reduction in crime once the drug trafficking is taken away from the gangs and criminals. Nonetheless, do not underestimate the power of legal deterrence. Once you legalize marijuana or any other substance, the government is giving it's citizens defacto approval to use or abuse that substance. The government's positon may continue to be to say, "NO" to drugs; but it would have all moral and ethical sincerity of Bill Clinton opening up a charm school for female interns. If and when this happens, like it or not, the government makes it 'OK' for a wide variety of people who normally would never dabble in those substances to begin experimentation. Drugs can and do ruin peoples lives. Having personally been a member of the Woodstock generation and having made my own youthful indiscretions, I can tell you with some certainty that my life would be very different had it been legalized. But, there was a point in my life when I came to grips with responsibility, recognized the downside of substance abuse and changed my life around. Just recently at the age of 48, after 7 years of training, I got my black belt in karate. No way on this planet earth could this have happened to the previous me. I'm as certain as one can be that if drugs were legal today I'd be sacked out on my sofa watching the original Star Trek series, grooving on grateful dead tunes and contemplating my lava lamp for hours at a time. LOL! Regards, Ed
