Key Word Here Being " Liberal ".

That is the current name of the Gov't in power now for almost 10 years. They are true liberals by any measure, except the leader has fascist tendencies and appears to take a European/French approach towards the US, not to mention its latest plunge into kleptocracy.

You and our many American friends are not alone when citing what appears to be a disregard for security matters in this country. But they are doing their PC Liberal best lately with some new initiatives on immigration...finally!

Not far enough as far as many in Canada are concerned , but the statement " We do not have a terrorist problem " says it all.Blind as bats and wouldn't know a terrorist if they tripped over one.

So this was just released and just maybe it will wake those clowns in Ottawawa up.The G8 meeting gets underway later this month here in the Calgary area.It was supposed to have an emphasis on African relief , as per the host's ( John Chretien )agenda. However, I am reading now that far more emphasis will be on security and defense issues , which pretty well makes sense.

The Liberals and the Bloc Quebec Quoi( one and the same mostly ) would sell this country ( minus Quebec )down the road for a nickel. We hope to be rid of this hedeous gov't and leader in the next election , but the oppositions are splintered and can't muster the votes individually to defeat them.A real shame.

Here is the report, much of what many have been saying for months in the less Liberal news media and I personally have been advocating since 9-11 and even before that. But I'm not named Granatstein and am no professor emeritus of history at York University. You have to be qualified....you see <GG>

Canada called defense freeloader

Canadian Press

Monday, June 10 – Online Edition, Posted at 10:30 PM EST

Canada must shed its supposed moral superiority and fully support the United States in its war on terrorism by paying more of the costs, a C.D. Howe Institute study released Monday says.

"Canada is a defence freeloader, and like spongers everywhere, we dislike those who carry the burden for us," writes J.L. Granatstein, the study's author and professor emeritus of history at York University.

"Very simply, whether Canadians realize it or not, Canada is now all but undefended at a time of danger ... the danger lies in wearing blinkers about the United States at a time it is in a vengeful, anxious mood. The Chrétien government seems either oblivious to the danger, or else it has given up."

The study calls for a cash infusion of $2.5-billion more than the current $12-billion Ottawa currently spends on the Canadian military, plus an additional $10-billion over the next five years. Mr. Granatstein argues that without the boost, Canadian sovereignty is threatened and any leverage in negotiations with the United States is lost.

Canada spends $265 (U.S.) per capita on defence, less than half the NATO average of $589, the report notes.

Mr. Granatstein asserts that it would be wise for Canadians to more actively support the U.S.-led war on terrorism, even if it were to extend to other countries.

"If Canada hangs back, reinforcing the perception that Canadian anti-Americanism and high falutin' morality too often verge on the unbearable, the costs to Ottawa might be very high indeed," he writes.

"To participate militarily in a war on Iraq would be a Canadian choice. To support the United States in such a war would be a Canadian requirement."

Arthur Rubinoff, a University of Toronto history professor, agreed that a cash-strapped Canadian military weakens our relationship with America.

"We are living off the United States security structure," he said, adding that the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 should have prompted a financial injection into homeland security.

"If it didn't happen after that, when would it get more support?"

Mr. Granatstein cites simple border delays following Sept. 11 as an example of the United States' ability to harm our economy. Close to 90 per cent of Canadian trade heads south, compared with 25 per cent of U.S. trade into Canada.

"Washington's capacity to inflict pain and enforce compliance on Canada is boundless. Canadian policy must be devoted to keeping the elephant fed and happy."

The report by the conservative think tank goes against recent comments from Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham, who said it is time for Canada to be more critical of the United States' role in international affairs.

Canada does not have a terrorist problem. America has a terrorist problem that Canada refuses to subsidize and pay for.

America's foreign policy and the financing of "The Colony" are the culprits.
