Not sure I follow. The Roman Empire was basically destroyed by Christianity and the consequent lack of moral fiber which ensued. Christianity created a passivity and mysticism which coincided with a lack of meaning and effort. The Germans were motivated by wordly concerns-not pipe dreams. Personally, I think that Rome simply embodied too many racial/cultural groups which were antithetical to a "Roman" identity which had been lost. How does it go...a house divided against itself...
