Excellent points, Steven, add in the fact that this world cup started 4 weeks earlier than usual and it is hard to argue against fatigue and general lack of preparation being significant factors.

Perhaps, in stead of fatigue... it is merely being careful with their legs, which are their most precious assets, since a bad injury could terminate a very rewarding career...

But you do make some important points.

Perhaps an expansion of more teams would be in order as it seems that the talent is expanding world wide... One could make a case for population growth based on improved soccer pool of talent -gg

An alternative in order to have less type of tournaments would be a regional championship based on the winners of each country's league champions I know that it already exists, but what I am referring to is a more "coordinated" one and plan in a way that results in both an enhanced show for the public and a "planned" season so players do not get burned out... combined with some sort of system that would allow more players to participate in world wide attention grabber tournaments.

Example... If you participate in tournament "A" then you are forced to take a break and someone else plays in tournament "B"

maybe I am making this too complicated and your suggestion of allowing more substitutions would work better... or a system like they do in ice hockey... (hard to do in soccer I think due to how team play works) don't know.

I tend to disagree with you as the quality of play... I was thinking about what you said, as I was watching Brazil v Costa Rica... Perhaps not the best game "technically" speaking but very entertaining to watch all those goals... come to think of it Costa Rica should have played a more "intelligent" game and not take on Brazil so openly... certainly Brazil is the wrong enemy to do so, unless you have a superb defense and incredible goalie...
Not the case for CR, at least in yesterday's game. (I thought the CR goalie was terrible.
