Funny Kevin...sure it's a tough one, but it's only tough if you remove the element of God like you so fervently appear to want to do. The fact is our marriage laws are built on the Judeo-christian belief system. Both the Torah and the Bible affirm this arrangement as being in alignment with God's wishes.

One man, working in harmony with one wife in the raising of children works as a wonderful template in the growth of a society.

Both Jews and christians believe the family is part of the building block of society. Both societies believe that the organization of human society is by the direction of God, and not some clever human being.

The removal of God from the equation places us as sophisticated animals where any rule of cohabitation should apply.

Are there areas of gray? Sure there are, but only in the area of human implementation. As a nation we must choose a cultural philosophy. We either subscribe to the Judeo-Christian principles in public policy, or we subscribe to the public policies of secular atheism and accept any form of marriage.

Our nation has always acknowledged a Creator and the primacy of religion without establishing a national church. And marriage laws are a fingerprint mark on the pages of our culture which have been imbued in our mental models. So ingrained are these assumptions, just discussing where they came from in a sort of analytical way can be a bit uncomfortable.
