How can you beat Dell's low cost? So what if it costs and extra $100 bucks a box. Their tech support is unparalleled. Why spend your own labor screwing around with it?

Oh I see, so if you are going to ask logical questions...Why even use separate PC's?? Why not Thin Client. i.e central servers farming out processing power to efficient cheap TC's like this...

It's the cost of the software, maintaining it, upgrading, that is the real hidden cost of company IT, and Microsoft are leaning down on IT guys even harder these days. There is a practical rebellion going on over the fixed license charges and upgrades.

Updating a central server makes much more sense.

I'm not an expert of course.

Re Dell... Why dont they use AMD chips too? Does the AMD CEO go to the wrong golf club or something?? People buy those boxes because they want AMD chips (imho) and can get really good service locally too. That don't have to worry about the big boys suddenly charging a lot more either. How much did INTC chips cost before AMP Athlons came along.

It all becomes obvious if you think about it... The question of trust in these uncertain economic times.

AMD keeps the prices honest...

Actually, in practice, it works the other way around. The local white box guy typically undersells Dell by many percentage points for exactly the same box content. Better still, he is just around the corner when the box has a problem. You don't spend many minutes on hold waiting for a "tech rep" to come on the line to tell you that the problem is "software related", and you don't have to pay the shipping costs nor wait for weeks for the return of your (hopefully) repaired PC. You just drop the box off at his shop and pick it up a day later. I've checked this situation out from one coast to the other and what I describe above is the norm.

A PC is a high maintenance item, and just as is the case when purchasing a car, it sure is nice to have a motivated local guy to provide quality service.
