It varies. Some stocks really adhere to it, but it is also situational.
For example, watch ORCL and AOL. ORCL Max Pain is 10 and AOL is between 17.5 and 20. I would expect ORCL to move up from here to hit 10 around Thursday, then hang around for a day.
AOL will probably move up to 18 and clear out the 17.5 and 20's, to some degree.
As long as stocks are in "a range", they tend to stick to this. Most stocks right now are some kind of range (not moving one way or another....or mildly down), so it's worked pretty well the last few months.
I've only paper traded it, though. I'm still too cautious to jump into this feet first.
