Yes, I know there is a difference between the two mediums. With the former, you need to establish accountability, i.e. each and every press release must have a valid contact person with a valid way to contact them. With the latter, hey, anything goes so reader beware.

Yes, theoretically anyone can establish an account on a news wire and start making stuff up to line their pockets, but, then again, anyone can also start robbing people in broad daylight. In both cases, sure, you might make some fast cash, but the risk vs. reward factor is likely not going to be too appealing to very many people. Unless the person who issued the bogus Cel-Sci PR took great pains to shield his identity all along the way, not to mention was able to hide any recent stock purchases to capitalize on his work, he'll likely be caught quite quickly, imo.
