Ron - I'll have to find a good source for the smoothing stuff. But two very good examples are depreciation and the earnings management that you talk about. But think about it - why should there be two different statements which are mostly the same thing?

As for accountants, I have 'met' one or two on SI although I don't remember who now. But even if I knew one I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of accountants, as with any intellectual profession (including mine -engineering), are mechanics. They can recite the rules but don't really understand them.
