Natural selection has been blamed, whether justifiably or not, for the double standard. Men can mate with a virtually unlimited number of women, so nature says get your sperm out there and replicate. Women can only make a baby with one man a year, basically, so they have to be much more selective, especially in pre-contraception days, about who they mate with. So the double standard isn't really a failure of moral fibre, but a result of natural forces at work.
