The Brits set up most of the mid east ones, as I recall, and they have stayed in place up to now, except, of course, for the overthrown ones. Even the overthrown ones have had their borders stay intact.

The problem with changes, as Bernard Lewis pointed out recently, is that the Muslim countries, (with the exception of Turkey), there that governments friendly to the west have populations that are antiwest, and the ones with governments that hate us have populations that like us.

What it seems to be is that none of these countries have populations that like their government, which is something to ponder.
