A different view:

09:56 ET At the risk... : At the risk of sounding like pollyannas, we would note that the decline in the Michigan number was not as shocking as it might seem at first glance; the Michigan index has been seesawing each month since early this year without much trend. The June level is on par with February and still well above post 9/11 levels, indicating that consumers remain reasonably optimistic but certainly aren't getting any more confident amid a sluggish recovery. This observation might not be enough to save the market today, but it is worthy of consideration.
