I have never subscribed to the "New Yorker", and although I may have come across his work, the name was entirely unfamiliar to me. I have these huge gaps in my learning. I have not read a lot of anything in the modern era, and I often can only observe quietly when people on SI discuss recent literature, movies, or art. I would be interested in hearing from avid readers of contemporary literature as to which authors they consider essential and significant...
