I agree with your comments and at some point in time the average investor will say screw the market and simply pay off the homes for a guaranteed 7% rate of return (rough estimate of 30 year mortgages). This could result in a decrease in mutual fund inflows which will hurt the bottom line of Wall Street. Then, maybe these fat cats of Wall Street/institutional shareholders will hopefully get off their arses and rein in the excesses of executive compensation. If institutions give up on a company then no matter how many options the CEO receives, if there are no buyers, they can't sell their free shares. If not, then as an individual shareholder I will do as Tom suggests and buy something else. I have no interest in investing in a company that has a CEO that has such blatant disregard for his shareholders.
