In the metric system, K designates 1000.
But K also is the Kelvin, a unit of temperature,
so to avoid confusion, a small k is used,
as in km, kHz, kcal.

Do not confuse these "k's' with those in KKK, which does not indicate an American billion (1000x1000x1000), and should not be confused with the English billion (but it is),
but rather is a unit of redness, as in necks (g).

P.S. My apologies to the English challenged, but no apologies to rednecks, because I "are" one.
